Game: Age of Discovery

Start

The year is 1492. You are a young, ambitious captain, eager to make your mark on the world. The Age of Discovery is in full swing, and the winds of change are blowing across the globe. The Portuguese have already established trade routes to the East, and the Spanish are seeking a westward passage to the Indies. You stand on the deck of your ship, the Santa Maria, gazing out at the vast Atlantic Ocean. The sun beats down on your face, and the salty air fills your lungs. You have been given a royal commission by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain to explore the unknown lands to the west.

Your crew, a motley bunch of seasoned sailors and eager young men, are restless with anticipation. They have heard tales of unimaginable riches and exotic lands waiting to be discovered. You, too, dream of glory and adventure.

But you also know that the journey will be fraught with danger. The seas are treacherous, and storms can arise without warning. You must be vigilant, resourceful, and courageous to succeed.

Study the available maps and charts

The Uncertain Horizon

You meticulously study the maps and charts, tracing your finger along the lines of the known world. The vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretches before you, a daunting mystery. You ponder the accounts of earlier explorers, their tales of monstrous sea serpents and uncharted lands.

The ship’s carpenter approaches you, his face etched with concern. "Captain," he says, "the ship’s hull is showing signs of wear. We need to make repairs before we venture too far."

"Order the crew to begin repairs immediately."

"Continue westward, hoping to reach land before the leak worsens."

A Stormy Night

The storm rages on, threatening to swallow the Santa Maria whole. The leak has worsened, and the ship is taking on water rapidly. What is your next course of action?

Try to weather the storm.

Navigating the Tempest

The storm rages on, tossing the Santa Maria like a toy in a bathtub. The waves are enormous, and the wind is howling like a banshee. The crew is struggling to maintain control of the ship, but the storm is relentless. The ship is taking on water, and the leak in the hull is worsening. You must make a decision.

Try to steer the ship towards the nearest landmass, hoping to find shelter.

The Tempestuous Sea

The storm rages on, the Santa Maria tossed about like a toy in the waves. The crew works tirelessly, but the ship is taking on water. You order them to double down on the pumps and secure the sails, hoping to ride out the tempest.

Despite the storm, you see a glimmer of hope: a small island in the distance. Do you try to steer towards it?

The Island of Hope

Try to steer towards the island.

Approaching the Island

The island seems closer now, but the storm shows no signs of letting up. The Santa Maria is taking on water, and the crew is struggling to keep her afloat. You must make a crucial decision:

Attempt to land on the island.

Approaching the Island

The Santa Maria, battered and bruised, finally reaches the island. You order the crew to lower the anchor, but a rogue wave slams into the ship, throwing it off course. The anchor snags on a submerged reef, and the Santa Maria is now stuck fast.

What is your next move?

Abandon ship and take refuge on the island.

The Island of Despair

The crew, battered and bruised, scramble onto the island. The Santa Maria, a mangled wreck, is slowly swallowed by the unforgiving waves. The island is small, rocky, and barren. There is no sign of fresh water or edible plants. The crew is hungry, thirsty, and desperate.

What is your next move, Captain?

Explore the island for resources.

The Hunt for Survival

The island is small, rocky, and barren. The air is thick with the smell of salt and the sound of the crashing waves. There is no sign of fresh water or edible plants. The crew is starting to panic.

You must make a decision. Do you:

Try to build a raft to sail to the mainland.

The Raft of Hope

You gather the remaining wood from the Santa Maria’s wreckage. You find some rope and nails, but not enough to build a seaworthy raft. What do you do?

Try to repair the Santa Maria.

The Storm’s Aftermath

The Santa Maria, battered and broken, rests on the reef. The storm has passed, leaving behind a wreckage of splintered masts and torn sails. The crew, exhausted and demoralized, gathers around the ship, assessing the damage.

What do you do?

Attempt to salvage the ship.

The Desperate Search

The Santa Maria is beyond saving. The crew has salvaged what they could, but the ship is a wreck. You have a few days’ worth of food and water, but you are stranded on a small, barren island. What do you do next?

Attempt to reach the mainland by raft.

Building a Raft

Food

The Raft’s Provisions

The crew, hungry and exhausted, gathers around the makeshift raft. The meager supplies salvaged from the Santa Maria are laid out: a few sacks of dried fruit, a small barrel of water, and a handful of tools. The sun beats down relentlessly on the barren island. What should the crew prioritize as they set sail for the mainland?

Focus on building a sail for the raft. The sea is calm, but a sail would allow them to catch the wind and make faster progress.

A New Hope

A) Thick canvas ripped from the Santa Maria’s sails, which is strong but heavy.

Building the Raft

A) Large, flat branches found on the island, which can be used as paddles.

The crew sets sail, their hopes pinned on reaching the mainland before the supplies run out.

<The raft, battered by the waves, struggles against the currents. The crew, their faces etched with exhaustion and determination, fight to keep it afloat.>
